Summer Update
Firstly, thank you to everyone who visited my recent Open Studio weekends. It was a pleasure to welcome so many people into the studio, share the work, and talk about painting. If you purchased a painting, I hope it has settled happily into its new home and continues to reveal itself over time.
The next Open Studio event will be the Winter Open Studios in November, and I look forward to opening the doors again then.
If you missed this year's Open Studios, please remember that the studio is always open by appointment. If you would like to visit, see new work, or simply spend some time looking around the studio, do get in touch to arrange a visit.
My next events take me a little further afield. On 4 July, I will be taking part in the Art Car Boot Fair at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, followed by an exhibition at Ampleforth Abbey beginning on 11 July.
I have never taken part in an art car boot fair before, so I am not entirely sure what to expect. Alongside recent paintings, I will also be bringing some older works that have remained in the studio. They belong to a period of my practice that I have perhaps moved away from, yet I still have a great affection for them. Looking back at older paintings can be surprisingly revealing; sometimes they make you wonder why certain ideas were left behind and whether they might deserve another look.
After the activity and energy of Open Studios, the past couple of weeks have been relatively quiet in the studio. That pause has allowed new work to begin to emerge.
At one end of the studio, I am working on large paintings approaching a metre square, while at the other, I have been making tiny works measuring just five centimetres across. (See Below) It has been fascinating to see how these different scales develop. The larger paintings ask for space, movement and patience, while the smaller works demand concentration and intimacy. Each seems to influence the other in unexpected ways.
As always, thank you for your continued interest and support. I hope to see some of you at the Baltic, at Ampleforth, or back in the studio before too long.
